The hen house

Chicken truly belong in an organic garden. Have you ever tasted an egg that is genuinely free-range and organic? When starting our bio garden in Rotterdam, one of the first steps was establishing our hen house. Chickens provide valuable manure that we compost for the soil. They produce fresh eggs, and just as importantly, they help keep the garden free from weeds and harmful pests. We do this by letting the chickens forage in mobile runs along garden paths or inside fenced plots once the growing season has ended. Snail eggs, wireworms, leatherjackets, and other pests are cleared out in no time, and weeds stand no chance. We chose to let the hens hatch their own eggs, which resulted in extra roosters that live a healthy, natural life outdoors before fulfilling a culinary purpose. Our goal is to maintain a flock of around 10 laying hens across three different breeds. The fresh eggs are shared and sold locally to cover feed costs.

The coops are built with a modular design, meaning we can easily expand our hen house whenever needed.

The bio garden kids are completely charmed by the young rooster.
