Ceramics

A recently discovered passion of mine is working with clay. After the Covid period, I started taking lessons with Joop Cock in Bergschenhoek. Joop is a versatile ceramic artist, and I learned a great deal from him.

Together with a number of other enthusiast people, we started a ceramics activity at the De Nieuwe Nachtegaal community centre. Susanne de Groot teaches hand-building, while I introduce participants to the pottery wheel.

I make all kinds of functional pottery myself, including bowls, dishes, vases and plates. It is fascinating to see a lump of clay take shape under your hands.

Learning to centre clay on the pottery wheel is not easy, but everyone can eventually learn it. If you have your own wheel, the best thing you can do is practise as much as possible. Spend time simply practising centring rather than always trying to make a finished object.

There are many useful videos on YouTube that can help you get started, but it takes many kilos of clay and plenty of practice to achieve consistent results.
